Connie Cohen MA, LMFT, AT
My greatest joy is to help people find their inner voice and personal power. Trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy, I work with both individuals and couples. Looking at attachment patterns that are unconsciously learned in childhood, we will see where and how those patterns play out in your life and how they hold you in unhealthy beliefs. Together, we will unravel the thought processes that thrive in judgment, scarcity, blame, and fear. I will encourage you to continue when you feel stuck. Through the process, I will empower you with tools that will help to reshape old beliefs, wrapping them with kindness and self-compassion. I truly believe the healing process toward change occurs once YOU gain insight into yourself. In our work together, I will encourage, probe and ask you questions to assist in that insight to foster self-empowerment through authentic self-expression. If you want to see real change in your communication patterns
My most successful clients are the ones who are willing to work, facing the demons that chase after them (that would be everyone who walks into my office). I enjoy working with stress, co-dependency, anxiety, depression, body image and relationship/communication issues that have caused personal discord. Working with me, clients have said that they feel heard and validated. My approach is direct and I will lovingly hold you accountable.
My journey to become a therapist has been a rather circuitous one. My undergraduate degree is in Business and Studio Arts. I have a Masters in Architecture that then transitioned into graphic design. From there, I launched into mosaic art, teaching and creating custom installations for over a decade. I furthered my education and received a Masters in Psychotherapy that now allows me to combine my love of self-expression with my quest for deeper insight.
Above everything else, my source of inspiration has been raising my two boys (who are now young adults). They have taught me how to listen and see things in a more open, accepting way. In my free time, I enjoy long walks with friends (both two legged and four), yoga, speaking Italian with anyone who will engage with me, and good food around a table filled with laughter and love.
Education
I have a BS in Studio Arts and Business from the University of Minnesota. Having worked for several years in advertising, I followed my curiosity and pursued a Masters in Architecture from SCI-Arc, in Santa Monica, CA. I was fortunate (and am grateful) to have had the option of choosing to stay at home to raise my children. All the while, I worked in both graphic design and mosaic art. Following my passion, mosaics lead me down the path of doing community/public art, desiring to help others through the healing powers of self-expression. With that as the driving force, I returned to school to get a Masters in Psychotherapy from the Adler Graduate School. Originally, my focus was art therapy but I expanded that with my love of working with couples. I am now a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, pursuing certification in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.
Training
I have completed an externship and core training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy along with being trained in Prepare and Enrich. Both of these models are widely used in working with couples.
I also have specialized training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, The Evolution of Consciousness and Self-Realization Practices.
